GETTYSBURG, Pa. — A Gettysburg college student has officially withdrawn from the institution following an investigation into a disturbing incident in which a racial slur was etched into another student’s skin.
Last week, the college confirmed that the offensive mark was inscribed using a plastic or ceramic instrument, and it was noted that those implicated were not partaking in any swim team activities.
On Monday, the college, alongside the victim’s family, issued a joint statement updating the community on the ongoing inquiry. Subsequently, the family of the affected student shared their perspective with The Gettysburgian, elaborating on the intricate nuances of the case and underscoring the necessity for a thorough investigation. They expressed gratitude for the college’s commitment to seeing the process through to its conclusion.
The administration had assured the family that as the investigation approached its final stages, they would engage in discussions to determine the most constructive path forward. Those dialogues have already commenced and are set to continue. Both parties recognize the gravity of the situation and are dedicated to collaborative efforts for resolution.
The College and the victim’s family acknowledged the severity of this occurrence and expressed hope that it could catalyze a transformative moment for the college community and beyond. The family’s statement in The Gettysburgian emphasized: “Our aspiration is that — in some small manner — this atrocious act can serve as a pivotal moment for Gettysburg College to embody its principles of diversity, inclusion, and justice, fulfilling the College’s mission to ‘Do Great Work.’ We fervently hope to foster a collective awareness that promotes healing and justice for our son and the broader Gettysburg College community.”
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed, and the victim has opted to allow the college’s disciplinary process to address the issue, according to Gettysburg Borough Chief of Police Robert Glenny Jr.
Founded in 1832, Gettysburg College student boasts a diverse student body of approximately 2,400 individuals from over 40 states and 51 countries. The swim season is scheduled to commence on October 19.
